Foothills Farm Newsletter

September 30, 2009

Dear Boarders and Students,

Another show season has come and gone and WOW, what a busy one! With the trailer going down the road almost every weekend and sometimes twice we had another very successful season, showing both Trillium and A shows.

A very special thank you goes out to all the people who helped to keep “the show on the road”. Foothills managed to be in several places at the same time with the help of Kari Bradley, Carolynn Michlowski, Lindsay Rovinelli, Morgan Methe and Kelly Gravelle. They dedicated their time and their valuable experience to help make everyone’s show as successful as it could be. Great team work girls, way to go!

Before we get into the results of a very successful show season we need to acknowledge the passing of one of Foothills Farm most valuable, loyal and kind personalities. Jethro our golden retriever who was almost 16 passed away peacefully in February, before the gang was off to Florida. He was definitely one of a kind and hung around long enough to make sure Cathy and Jedd could keep the farm running without him. He will be sadly missed by everyone who knew him. He was known as the Foothills Horse Whisperer, as the horses loved him and he seemed to have a calming effect around them. Goodbye old buddy. Our “forever dog”.

Another great loss to the Foothills team was one of the most successful hunters Foothills Farm has ever campaigned. Katriina Ruotsalo’s Laboe passed away while preparing to show in Traverse City, Michigan. Laboe won the flat phase and the over fence phase of the OHJA Young Horse Hunter Challenge as a 6 yr old, as well as many, many championships and reserve championships in her career, both Trillium and “A”. Katriina’s first year ever showing she won the OHJA overall trophy in the Beginner Hunter Division riding Laboe. She certainly was a “Northern Legacy” loved by all. Last year Laboe qualified for and showed successfully at the Royal Winter Fair in the Adult Amateur Hunter with Kari Bradley and the Combined Working Hunter with Cathy. A great loss to us all. She had a heart of gold.

Now onto better news. The Trillium Championships proved to be quite successful for the Northeast Region again this year. Although the schedule was a little hectic and the days went quite late we had a blast.

The “A” Shows also proved to be successful with a big gang showing, some for fun some to qualify for the Royal Winter Fair (our national finals). Going to the Royal this year are: Sarah Russell and Bacall (Lauren) in the Children’s Hunter Division, Luccios and Carolyn Michlowski in the Amateur Owner Hunter Division. Miranda Travers-Cavill stepped up to the Rising Star with her new mount The Air Up There and is going to go in the Talent Squad/Rising Star final and the Jr/Am 1.40m, she also finished 2nd in the CET provincial finals and will be participating at the Royal in the National Finals. Crossing their fingers since they are just on the edge are Emma Munro and Way to Be (Sparrow) in the Children’s Hunter Division, Callado and Joni Marinich in the Combined Working Hunter Division and Hey There Delilah and Leah Blanchette in the Medium Pony Hunter Division, also Lindsay Rovinelli in the Jump Canada Medal.

We had other really successful results with some people just wanting to try it out including Orianna and Marlene Stanley with a reserve champion in the Beginner Hunter Division and champion in the Low Adult Hunter Division in Palgrave in August and Kelly Sloan and Tyger Lily and Sarah Russell and Bacall winning Roots Jackets as a result of their placings at both of the Ottawa shows. Kelly Sloan and Tyger Lily were champion in week 1 and Camille Bortolotto and Mad About You were reserve champion in week 1 in the Low Children’s Hunter Division. Kassia Bouffard and Spot On winning champion in the Pre Green Hunter Division all at that same Ottawa show, Spot On was also champion in the Beginner Children’s Division at Palgrave in May. Also in the ribbons were Becky Burgess and Tyger Lily at the Ottawa horse shows in the Children’s Hunter Division and Caroline Hawson and Ceara at the May Palgrave’s in the Jr/Am 1.0m Jumper Division. Obviously the group heading to the Royal and awaiting Royal confirmation speak for themselves.

And how about the renos? Yeah, it’s coming the windows, the siding, the sign, the summer barn soon to be a winter barn. Yes the tack room is coming and other exciting projects. Fencing is slow but sure. We promise! Just trying to keep the facility looking its best. A special thank you to Anne Fay who continues to do all of the garden and tree planting. She takes great pride in our facility. It looks super Anne!

The Rick Smith Memorial Show was another great success. The Gentlemen’s Classic raised $1700.00 for the region and what a blast. Jedd made us proud piloting Way To Be (Sparrow) to her first jumper win. Our youngest gentleman sure showed up a few of the vintage (shall we say) group. Oh well next year. Thank you to everyone who showed up to help prepare the facility for the show. What great effort. The rings were beautiful, the jumps looked great and everyone enjoyed the fantastic dinner and live band on Saturday. (Mind you Sunday was a bit hard for some of us.)

Ok onto our fall schedule. There’s enough to keep you busy, but not too exhausted. We will allow you all a small breather to rest the horses and replenish the pocket books!!!
